A common stereotype of redheads is that they have fiery tempers and sharp tongues. In Anne of Green Gables, a character says of Anne Shirley, the redheaded heroine, that "her temper matches her hair", while in The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield remarks that "People with red hair are supposed to get mad very easily, but Allie [his dead brother] never did, and he had very red hair."
During the early stages of modern medicine, red hair was thought to be a sign of a sanguine temperament. In the Indian medicinal practice of Ayurveda, redheads are seen as most likely to have a Pitta temperament.
Another belief is that redheads are highly sexed; for example, Jonathan Swift satirizes redhead stereotypes in part four of Gulliver's Travels, "A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms," when he writes that: "It is observed that the red-haired of both sexes are more libidinous and mischievous than the rest, whom yet they much exceed in strength and activity." Swift goes on to write that: "...neither was the hair of this brute [a Yahoo] of a red color (which might have been some excuse for an appetite a little irregular) but black as a sloe..."
Another one that I found on another website is that:
In ancient Egypt red haired animals and people were associated with the god Set. The Egyptians also had many red haired pharaohs. However the Egyptians also regarded the colour red as unlucky and according to Claudie de Lys many red haired maidens were burnt to death to wipe out the tint. There are also stories of the Egyptians burying redheads alive! The ancient Greeks also had myths about red hair, including the belief that redheads would turn into vampires following their death. Unflatteringly the Greek philosopher Aristotle described redheads as being emotionally un-housebroken.
Red hair also gets a mention in the bible. The word Adam is supposedly the Hebrew word for 'red' or 'ruddy', and king David also apparently had red hair. Also Judas and Mary Magdalene are often portrayed as being redheaded. Some people even believe the 'mark of Cain' to actually be red hair.
In Eastern Europe, however, things were much worse for redheads. According to Montague Summers red hair and green eyes were said to be the sign of a witch, werewolf or vampire. There are also tales of red haired children being killed at birth due to similar thinking.
You want to know what I think? Give redheads a break, as if they asked to be born with a head of red hair. Duh...!?
Start with a head of hair. Black, blonde, doesn't matter as long as it's hair.
If you have natural black hair, like mine, bleach it first so that the color will show more clearly.
Wash away hair bleach after leaving it on for 15 - 30 minutes.
If you have long hair, let the excess water drip until semi-dry.
Apply the red hair dye as you would to bleach your hair blond.
If you want a pinker tone, leave it on for only 10 minutes maximum. But if you want it red and flashy like mine, leave it on for at least 20 minutes maximum. Wash and blow dry.
