Samsung SGH-i780

When it comes to easy to use smartphones, nothing really beats touching the display with a finger. And that is why I thought the newly added touchscreen on the Samsung SHG-i780 was the most important improvement it has over its predecessor, the i600. And Samsung did not just endow the i780 with touch-sensitivity, the screen itself is also bigger and better. It stands at 2.55 inches at 320 x 320 pixels, compared to the i600's 2.3 inches at 230 x 240 pixels. The scaled-down Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone edition in the i600 also saw a step up. The i780 now runs on Windows Mobile 6 Professional. While the i780 has a bigger footprint, its waist size hasn't increased all that much. It is still at a relatively svelte 12.9mm, compared to the i600's 11.8mm. I thought the upsize in the i780 was for the better actually - its Qwerty keys are now fatter, not unlike those found on the Palm Treo, making typing easier. You will also find something unique in the i780 - an "optical joystick". It functions like a trackpad on a notebook, albeit a super tiny one. Simply move your finger around this pad to move the cursor on screen. But once you switch it to the four-way navigation mode, it'll function much like a normal four-way button, except that you swipe your finger across the pad to navigate instead of hitting a physical button. It's a novel idea, but quite frankly, the traditional four-way button is still easier to use. The built-in camera has been upsized to a 2-megapixel one from the 1.3-megapixel camera in the i600. I thought the photo quality was average, but the response time and shutter lag were pretty good for a camera phone. Pity the resolution isn't higher as some phones are already using a 3-megapixel camera. The i780 includes a new GPS chip and comes with free Agis NavFone PPC software with Southeast Asia maps in the bundled microSD card. In addition, the phone keeps the good stuff found in the i600, such as 3.5G and Wi-Fi. As with most other Samsung phones, the microSD card slot is conveniently located at the side, not buried underneath the battery. But unfortunately, it uses the same proprietary port for charging and earphones. This severely limits the choices of earphones you can use and you can't listen to music and charge the phone simultaneously. Generally, the phone's call quality was good, but the speaker phone became muffled when I pumped up the volume. The package also includes a second battery and a separate charger for this battery and a 1GB microSD card.
