When you looked at the title of the post, what was on your mind exactly? Did it come to mind on what type of person would say that? In Singapore, this sentence is usually shouted by teenage boys and girls, around 13 to 17 years old and most probably in street gangs spoiling for a fight. Don't get me wrong. Most Singaporeans are not that fight-provocative, in fact, people who usually say that are most probably those who think their father owned the country. Let me recount to you readers some situations when these lines are uttered, and mind you, I came from a neighborhood school and I definitely got to see many such scenes before and after school and sometimes during school hours within the school compound. What started off would be a bump against another student along the corridor and the person who got bumped would start off with some profanities which I think I can repeat here since most of my readers might not understand at all. Here goes:
Student A: "Chee-bye, knocked onto people never say sorry ah!"
Student B: "Nah beh, sorry lah!"
Student A: "What? Want to fight ah?"
Student B: "Kanni na chee-bye, you think I don't dare, izzit?"
Student A: "After school, I call my brothers wait for you at 247. Lan Jiao."
Student B: "You don't worry, I call my brothers oso after school. Kanni na."
Here's the explanation for all the alien words you read above, and this really did happened at near the school gate right after school, which unfortunately was broken up before the "fight" could commence. If you my readers got to see this scene, I assure you will see it more as a joke than a fight club scenario. Line 1's "chee-bye" is the Singaporean version of American slang for "cunt". Line 2's "nah-beh" means "fuck you" in Singapore dialect. Line 4's "Kanni na chee-bye" means "Fuck your cunt". Line 5's "247" simply refers to a block number in which they are going to fight at and "lan jiao" is the Singapore version of American slang for "penis/cock". Lastly, Line 6's is already mentioned.
And now back to the report I saw that contained the title of this post. This woman in her 60s had accussed a coffee shop assistant of staring at her, challenged the coffee shop assistant to a fight and also uttering "What you looking at? Want to fight?", in which she swung a chair at the coffee shop assistant, chased the coffee shop assistant around the coffee shop before finally lunging at the coffee shop assistant with a knife. The 'lunging at the coffee shop assistant with a knife' part was a little intimidating but overall the report had be laughing non-stop for hours. Imagine a 60-year-old lady, old enough to be your grandma, starts to challenge people around her for a fight only to have it backfired on her. Simply bloody pathetic to me. But still, it was lucky that the woman finally got tired and sat down and put the knife back into her handbag while all the time panting and verbally abusing the victim (the coffee shop assistant). Really stupid, what was the old lady thinking of? She's not that fucking young anymore, mind you. She's in her 60s not age 16. Like duh..!
