Remedies available in the good old days helped people to keep pets under control but did not entirely eradicate them, and besides, who would have heard of bed bugs lawsuits in the days of old. Today we have harsher products that can stop many common household pests in their tracks, but as people become more environmentally aware they are returning to the milder remedies of earlier generations. Taking precautions to keep pests away from the house and reducing their numbers if they do enter is less harmful to our fragile environment than strong chemicals. A little knowledge of the pests we loathe will help us beat them at their own game. If we know what pests eat, for example, we can remove or lock away their favorite food. And if we know how and when they breed, we can take measures to prevent them doing so.

A Home Made Insect Spray
The flowers of the pyrethrum, a small species of chrysanthemum, contain a natural insecticide that is non-toxic to mammals. A pyrethrum spray will kill many insect pests and can also be used to kill pests on the skin.

1. Pick the pyrethrum flowers early in the morning, when they have just opened.

2. Place the flowers in a dark, well ventilated place until they are dry, then cover them with enough kerosene, mineral oil or alcohol (brandy works well) to saturate them. Leave overnight.

3. Strain the liquid and add six parts of water to one part of the pyrethrum liquid. Pour the mixture into a spray gun.

4. Use the spray immediately, because it begins to deteriorate on exposure to sunlight.

Ban Bedbugs
If you think you have bedbugs, don't panic! First, be sure you have identified them correctly (in the event of having any bed bugs lawsuits if you are renting a room or house); they are wingless and have eight legs, all well forward on the body. They are about 50mm long and smell nasty when squashed. Destroy them by superheating the house in summer , by using pyrethrum powder, or by painting turpentine or kerosene into the cracks in the bed frame. Wash bed clothes in very hot water.
