Fish with Achar

Fish with Achar

Back in the 1990s, chicken rice in Singapore was served with achar. Achar is a dish that is made up of pineapple cubes, sliced cucumber, sliced carrot that is swimming in a sweet and sour watery sauce. Nowadays, chicken rice in Singapore is served with very stingy servings of sliced cucumbers, due to the fact that Singaporeans can't be bothered to open their mouths and asked for the cucumber slices not to be added even if they don't like cucumbers in the first place. Basically, Singaporeans are a wasteful lot and they want to feel that it's worth their money worth when they buy things, especially food. That's why food sellers are rather stingy with side dishes.

Anyway, my mother would buy these ready-made and ready-packed packet(s) of achar and steamed it together with fish. Best eaten with rice, with the gravy spooned onto your rice. But it can be eaten on its own too!!
