Well, there was this once I served a customer who was buying newspapers and magazines and as like every single day, I asked, "Do you need a bag/carrier for your purchase?" and he was quick to ask if it was free. After I assured him that we don't charge for the bag, unlike Ikea and supermarkets, he offered an explanation.
He said that everytime he went to NTUC Fairprice (a local supermarket boasting low prices) with his own grocery bag and spent SGD10, SGD0.10 will be deducted from his grocery bill. If you thought that was supposed to be the end of the story, then no!
Apparently, the cashiers at NTUC will simply "act blur" and not give you the SGD0.10 deduction promised. Instead, if you know you have your own grocery bag and shunned using plastic grocery bags and yet happened to spend SGD10, you have to "remind" them of this fact that you should get SGD0.10 off your bill. If not, you're being cheated into bringing your own bag, spent SGD10 just to get a measely discount, only to have the cashier pretend that he or she don't know that rule...
Well played, NTUC!! Seriously, NTUC Green Reward? More like, NTUC Green Punishment to me.
